Elton J. Bruins, long-time professor in the Department of Religion at Hope College, spent years collecting documents by and about Albertus C. Van Raalte, founder of Holland, Michigan and early patron of Hope College. Documents were gathered from dozens of public and private collections, making a nearly exhaustive collection of Van Raalte's writings and reflections. It is these documents that make up the "Van Raalte Papers."
Digitizing the Van Raalte papers was supported by the Dutch Culture USA program by the Consulate General of the Netherlands in New York. The project was done in partnership with Heritage Hall at Calvin University, which also digitized its Van Raalte collections.

William Buursma and Althea Buursma
Rev. Albertus C. Van Raalte presided at the meeting of the consistory of the First Reformed Church at which time a letter was read written by a Mr. Williamson, secretary of the Collegiate Church of New York. The clerk, namely, Van Raalte, was instructed to thank the church for their gift of $1,000.00 and request the monies be paid in small amounts of New York paper currency. Discussion was held about the validity of baptism of those people baptized in the Hervormde Kerk. This church was considered heretical by some but "...to declare an entire ecclesiastical body as heretical is only in God's domain." Van Raalte continues to serve as the clerk.

"C. G. de Moen, President and D. J. Van Der Werp, Secretary, of the Board of Curators at the Theological School of the Christian Seceded Church at Kampen Send a Letter to the Classis of Holland"
C. G. de Moen, D. J. van der Werp, and Henry ten Hoor
C. G. de Moen, president and D. J. van der Werp, secretary, of the Board of Curators at the Theological School of the Christian Seceded Church at Kampen send a letter to the Classis of Holland because the board has received a letter from the Rev. Albertus C. Van Raalte, secretary of the Classis. They declare that a close relationship exists between the Classis and the theological school. The school was organized in 1854 and now had four instructors and 46 students. The school would welcome young men from the Colony for theological study although they recognize that distance is a problem. "And since we notice how generously God is dealing with you, we make free to commend our school to your liberal charity..."

A Handwritten Account of Three Pages About the Visit of Rev. Philip and Margaret Phelps to Holland, Michigan, as the Phelps Family Made a Western Tour.
Frances Phelps Otte
A handwritten account of three pages about the visit of Rev. Philip and Margaret Phelps to Holland, Michigan, as the Phelps family made a western tour. The document may have been written by Frances Phelps Otte. The document is undated. There is considerable detail in the account as to the various kinds of transportation used and the places stayed during the trip. At this time, Phelps was pastor of the Reformed Church, Hastings on- Hudson, New York. The author believed that the Board of Education of the Reformed Church in America may have suggested visiting the Colony. When the Phelps called on the Van Raaltes, Mrs. Van Raalte was holding daughter, Anna, who was very sick. Van Raalte was not home. The Phelps were entertained at supper by the John Van Vlecks. Van Vleck was conducting academy classes "in some home." Phelps preached September 28 in the "Dutch Church." On Monday, the Phelps took the stage to Grand Haven.

Diary Entry of Geisje Vander Haar Visscher
Geisje Vander Haar Visscher and Clarence Jalving
Geisje Vander Haar Visscher's diary contains an entry on page 13, in which she made a reference to both Albertus C. Van Raalte and to Mrs. Christina Van Raalte. An entry for 1849 on p. 10 said that the Van Raaltes often came to visit the Vander Haars. The 1856 reference is about the "High School" and bringing it into a better condition. This is a reference to the Pioneer School. She also said Mr. Van Vleck had come to the school. She thought that Mrs. Van Vleck was a lovely person. The Vander Haar apparently got to know the Van Vlecks well.
