Abstract
The average Doppler shifts of characteristic γ rays from nuclei produced in the 16O + 16O and 12C + 20Ne reactions have been measured. Recoil velocities deduced from these data are shown to be sensitive to the heavy-ion reaction mechanism. Possible signatures of fusion-evaporation, direct-transfer or inelastic scattering, deep inelastic, and incomplete fusion processes are discussed.
