Description

Panoramic view of Rutgers College, chartered in 1766, now known as Rutgers University. Seven buildings are shown, surrounded by a fence with pillars marking the entry at the corner of two streets. There are trees around the buildings and pedestrians on the walkway outside the fence. Below the image the buildings are labeled, left to right: "Grammar School. Van Nest Hall.--(Hidden.) Geological Hall. Middle College. Kirkpatrick Chapel. President's House. Astronomical Observatory." Along the bottom of the image it says "View of Rutgers College and grounds, at New Brunswick, N. J., 1879." What appears to be a handwritten note in the bottom left corner of the image says "Photo Eng Co NY".
