This message from Gerrit Van Schelven reads as follows: Received Holland, Mich., July 21, 1871, from Rev. Dr. A. C. Van Raalte through the hands of Jacob Labots, One Hundred and Fifty Dollars, to balance all demands held by us against him for flour, provisions, etc., furnished for the support of the family of his son Albertus Van Raalte, by De Jong, Van Schelven & Oggel, out of their store, and for which I have always held him morally responsible."
The original documents are held in the Albertus C. Van Raalte Collection (M300) or the Dirk B.K. Van Raalte Collection (M301) in Heritage Hall, Hekman Library, Calvin University, Grand Rapids, MI. The Van Raalte material in Heritage Hall has since been reorganized.
