The collection includes three unpublished manuscripts from the Rev. William Moerdyk family: Autobiography of Jacobus “James” Moerdyk Sr. (1887) (translated by his son, the Rev. Peter Moerdyk); Rev. William Moerdyk, D.D.: Immigration, Settlement, Education (n.d.); and Rev. William Moerdyk Pastorates (n.d.). The first two documents contain much information on life in the Netherlands from the 1830s, immigration from the Netherlands in 1849, settlement life in Zeeland, Michigan, and Kalamazoo, Michigan, and the hardships acquainted with the first Dutch settlements in western Michigan during the 19th century. William Moerdyk’s account of the news of the start of the U.S. Civil War and the reaction of local citizens, and his commencement address for the first Hope College graduation exercises in July 1866, are also included.
